Symptoms of diabetes are often felt by the afflicted due to the unusual manifestations of the disease itself. The symptoms in type 1 and type 2 diabetes are likely to be the same due to the elevation of the blood sugar level. This may be attributable to insufficient or non-production of insulin, or there is insulin resistance.

Type 1 diabetes

The pancreas no longer produces the needed insulin because the immune system is destroying the insulin which may be due to viral infection or there is disorder in the genes.

Knowing What are the Symptoms of Diabetes Type 1

Symptoms of type 1 diabetes: Frequent urination, excessive thirst, fatigue, nausea, vomiting or weight loss in spite of having a good appetite.

Type 2 Diabetes

The pancreas is producing only a small amount of insulin or there is some insulin resistance. Often affected are obese persons and older people due to fewer physical activity which lessens the insulin sensitivity.

Knowing What are the Symptoms of Diabetes Type 2

1. Fatigue – The cells are in charge to metabolize the glucose. But when the body fat metabolizes to acquire the energy requirement of the body, more energy is used and the result is fatigue.

2. Thirst (polydipsia) – When there is glucose concentration in the blood, the brain will receive a signal to minimize it by giving rise to excessive thirst; the unloading of the excess glucose will cause frequency in urination leading to feelings of dehydration.

3. Frequent urination (polyuria) – The blood deposits the excess glucose to the kidneys as waste and the kidney will function naturally by excreting it out of its system. Due to the excretion of the extra sugar in the blood via the urine, it carries with it a substantial amount of water leading to dehydration.

4. Increased appetite (polyphegia) – As the pancreas detects the presence of high blood sugar level, it continues to produce insulin as its attempt to neutralize or lower the blood sugar level. As a consequence, there is an increased feeling to eat more.

5. Weight loss – The substantial loss of water during urination (polyuria) and the metabolism of protein and body fat will lead to weight loss.

6. Blurred vision – The eyes will lose its ability to focus because the body fluid becomes lessened immediately affecting the tissues of the eye lenses.

7. Irritability – The inefficient supply of glucose to the brain and other organs will make us uncomfortable and exhausted.

8. Slow-healing wounds – When the blood vessels and nerves are damaged by diabetes, the immune system loses its ability of the body to battle against infection; as a result, wounds take a longer time to heal. This defect will be aggravated by the settling in of bacteria in the wound to inflict infection.

9. Impotency in men – The male sexual function is affected due to the diabetes disease, as blood circulation has become slightly disrupted or impaired by the elevation of blood sugar.

Asking your diabetes educator as to what are the symptoms of diabetes, will help you gain knowledge of the things you should watch out for in managing your diabetes. Forewarned is also forearmed, hence, proper guidance and knowledge are always the key elements in the proper implementation of diabetes treatments.

As food is digested in the body, part of the food eaten becomes glucose (sugar) and will enter the bloodstream. Glucose is needed by the body to serve as its fuel and to become fuel, it must be transferred to the bloodstream for absorption by the fat, liver and muscle cells of the body.

The insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, makes it possible for the cells to absorb the glucose. It is when the pancreas produces insufficient insulin or there is an abnormal response of the fat, liver and muscle cells to insulin, or both occurs, that diabetes signs, symptoms and other indications will take place.

Diabetes is a life-long disease and one should be vigilant if certain diabetes signs and symptoms surface which include the following:

Symptoms of diabetes include:

Frequency in relieving one’s self or urinating.

A person often feels thirsty for unknown reasons.

Blurred or hazy vision usually occurs.

The pangs of hunger are always there.

Feeling tired and overly fatigued.

The occurrence of sexual impotency in men.

Wounds especially in the foot area tend to heal longer resulting to bacterial infections.

If in case you will often experience all or any of these diabetes signs, symptoms or other such indications, pay your doctor a visit so your blood sugar level can be test checked. The following are often the tests involved to determine if you are already pre-diabetic:

1. Fasting glucose level – This is the test preferred for type 1 and type 2 diabetes. There is diabetes if fasting glucose level is more than 126 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl) on two different occasions. There is impaired fasting glucose or pre-diabetes if between the level of 100 mg/dl and 126 mg/dl. Here, fasting for a period of eight hours is required then blood is extracted from the arm using a syringe.

2. Random or non-fasting glucose level – Diabetes is believed to be present if the glucose level is above 200 mg/dl together with excessive thirst, frequent urination and fatigue. A syringe is used to get the blood from the arm.

3. Oral glucose tolerance test – This is usually used to diagnose type 2 diabetes. After two hours of drinking 75 grams of glucose that was dissolved in water, diabetes is diagnosed if the glucose level is more than 200 mg/dl. The glucose level is determined over a three-hour time interval period either at the laboratory or at the doctor’s office. With the use of a syringe, blood is extracted from the arm.

4. Ketone testing – Done to test type 1 diabetes using urine sample. Usually conducted when blood sugar is more than 240mg/dl, with severe sickness like stroke, heart attack, pneumonia, etc., or during the time of pregnancy.

If all the diabetes signs, symptoms and blood tests confirm that you are now a diabetic, the best thing to do is strictly follow what the doctor or endocrinologist prescribes in order to manage the disease and avoid further complications.
