The insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, makes it possible for the cells to absorb the glucose. It is when the pancreas produces insufficient insulin or there is an abnormal response of the fat, liver and muscle cells to insulin, or both occurs, that diabetes signs, symptoms and other indications will take place.

Diabetes is a life-long disease and one should be vigilant if certain diabetes signs and symptoms surface which include the following:

Symptoms of diabetes include:

1. Frequency in relieving one’s self or urinating.
2. A person often feels thirsty for unknown reasons.
3. Blurred or hazy vision usually occurs.
4. The pangs of hunger are always there.
5. Feeling tired and overly fatigued.
6. The occurrence of sexual impotency in men.
7. Wounds especially in the foot area tend to heal longer resulting to bacterial infections.

If in case you will often experience all or any of these diabetes signs, symptoms or other such indications, pay your doctor a visit so your blood sugar level can be test checked. The following  are often the tests involved to determine if you are already pre-diabetic:

1. Fasting glucose level – This is the test preferred for type 1 and type 2 diabetes. There is diabetes if fasting glucose level is more than 126 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl) on two different occasions. There is impaired fasting glucose or pre-diabetes if between the level of 100 mg/dl and 126 mg/dl. Here, fasting for a period of eight hours is required then blood is extracted from the arm using a syringe.

2. Random or non-fasting glucose level – Diabetes is believed to be present if the glucose level is above 200 mg/dl together with excessive thirst, frequent urination and fatigue. A syringe is used to get the blood from the arm.

3. Oral glucose tolerance test – This is usually used to diagnose type 2 diabetes. After two hours of drinking 75 grams of glucose that was dissolved in water, diabetes is diagnosed if the glucose level is more than 200 mg/dl. The glucose level is determined over a three-hour time interval period either at the laboratory or at the doctor’s office. With the use of a syringe, blood is extracted from the arm.

4. Ketone testing – Done to test type 1 diabetes using urine sample. Usually conducted when blood sugar is more than 240mg/dl, with severe sickness like stroke, heart attack, pneumonia, etc., or during the time of pregnancy.
