Being diagnosed with diabetes does not mean that your life is over. Although living with diabetes can be challenging, and demands total discipline, progression must be alleviated.

Generally, when diagnosed it is classified as type 1 or type 2. The impact that both types have on your life is critical, however. The disease affects children and adults alike and can indicate life-threatening results if not treated properly.

The type 1 diabetes, also referred to as juvenile diabetes usually develops in children and young adults. The type 2 diabetic is generally 40 years or older. Commonly known as adult-onset diabetes, it accounts for 90 to 95% of all diagnosed cases in America.

Diabetes involves digested food, the pancreas, insulin, and blood sugar (glucose) levels. The condition develops when the individual’s body no longer produces enough insulin or the insulin is not used productively.

It is the pancreas’ job to produce the insulin using the digested food that is turned into glucose. The insulin builds up in the bloodstream causing high blood sugar (glucose) levels as opposed to helping the body cells convert the glucose into fuel or energy for the body.

Living with diabetes for long periods of time may cause irreversible damage to organs of the body. The high blood sugar levels can damage the eyes, blood vessels, nerves, and kidneys. When these organs are damaged, of course, other medical complications occur.

In most cases, there are genetic and/or environmental factors that trigger the onset of diabetes. The genetic pre- disposition often remains dormant until activated by environmental factors.

Effective diabetic management must become a lifestyle choice not an option. The disease forces you to examine specific life-style habits that most people take for granted. Upon diagnosis, depending upon your type, you may require oral medications or insulin injections.

However, diabetes can be treated, controlled, and cured by implementing healthy life-style changes. Diabetes demands that you practice commitment and discipline. The first line of defense against diabetes is to control its progression.

When treating diabetes, the goal is to keep the blood sugar level as close to normal as possible. An increased blood sugar level (hyperglycemia) is not a safe level. Low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia) are not safe, either.

The key to living with diabetes is to make a commitment to preventive care and management. First, it is important to identify the symptoms that may occur. When the symptoms persist, it is time to seek the attention of your physician immediately.

Excessive thirst

Frequent nausea or vomit

Deep/faster breathing

Weak or drowsy

Lost of significant weight

Breath smells like fingernail polish

Trembles or dizziness

Blurred vision

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you may be living with diabetes. Once it has been diagnosed, then it’s time to modify your life-style.

Healthy Diet Plan

eat meals around the same time daily

eat three times a day

eat plenty of fiber

eat fewer “empty” calories

Exercise

helps the body use the insulin for energy more effectively

good for the heart, cholesterol levels, blood pressure

helps with mental stability- feeling better/less anxious

lose weight

Stop Smoking and Excessive Drinking

It is quite important for people affected with diabetes to be well informed about the proper diets for diabetes for better prevention and control. Having knowledge of these diets for diabetes is having a thorough knowledge of how various food groups can affect us.

Diabetes is a disease due to the insulin insufficiency to help regulate the body’s metabolism resulting to high sugar blood level. Insulin is a hormone or a substance produced by the pancreas that helps in the use and storage of glucose (sugar) when food is undergoing digestion stage.

Luckily, there is the glycemic index (GI) for diabetes. It is a guide that identifies how one can regulate the carbohydrate content known as glucose, and the corresponding result with regards to the blood sugar level.

However, some health experts argue that the use of glycemic index presents difficulty since compositions may vary from one person to another. However, others insist that the glycemic index guide should be used to set a standard.

The glycemic index is helpful in planning the meal of diabetics or people suffering from the diabetes disease. Hence, foods with low GI will have a relatively small rise in the blood sugar level while foods with high GI will have the tendency to shoot up the level of the blood sugar.

Hence, the index numbers represent food with the highest glucose content as a fast acting carbohydrate. This is to raise low blood sugars after a recent activity like intense exercises which involved the use of much body energy.

Conversely, foods containing slow carbs or glucose content, will prevent excessive glucose levels in the body. Glycemic Index numbers therefore will start at an arbitrary number of 100 with food groups showing numbers in a range of near 100, median numbers away from one hundred or a long distance away from one hundred. These index guides therefore will come in useful in planning meals for diabetic patients.

With the aid of the Glycemic Index, the ultimate goals are:

1. To make the sugar level in the blood normal.
2. To control the blood pressure thereby protecting the heart.
3. To be more conscious in attaining a reasonable weight.
4. To avoid complications emanating from diabetes like heart and kidney diseases.
5. To aid in achieving good health.

Calorie counts are also significant in planning the diets for diabetes. Normally, type 1 diabetes is restricted to around 16 calories for every pound of body weight in a day. While type 2 diabetes requires a calorie diet approximately measuring 1,500 to 1,800 per day. A gram of carbohydrate is around 4 calories, more or less.

On the other hand, there are the so-called free foods that you can partake without counting their calories. They contain no more than 20 calories or less than 5 grams of carbohydrates. The food groups include broth, mineral water, coffee, tea, diet soft drinks, sugar free candies and the likes.

Diabetics should focus not only with the diets for diabetes but also maintain a habitual exercise regimen. Regular exercise will improve blood circulation, the immune system, and insulin sensitivity. However, prior consultation with the attending physician regarding food or exercise is still needed.
