The growing statistics about obesity, diabetes and children with diabetes have been the subject of several documented studies. There is much concern as to the rise in figures especially concerning children as they become common sufferers of both the type 1 and type 2 diabetes disease.

Insulin imbalance and resistance to insulin as the underlying causes of diabetes and children with these insulin defects, often arise from cases of obesity. At a time when a great number of the population was less mindful of their eating habits leading to overweight or obesity, these same members of the society produced off-springs with inherent genetic deficiencies of hormonal imbalances particularly insulin.

As the offspring grew older, they developed dietary habits that trigger hormonal imbalances including the inability of insulin to help in the absorption of glucose to provide them with bodily energy.

Diabetes and Children Diagnosed with Diabetes:

I. Based on statistics genetically impaired children represent 5% of the present-day sufferers of diabetes type 1 and are generally characterized by the following conditions:

• They are not obese and in fact prone to weight loss.

• They manifest diabetes symptoms such as frequent thirstiness and urination.

• They may experience controlled levels of blood sugar but will eventually revert to experiencing imbalance as time passes due to dietary habits and lifestyle factors.

• Their diabetic condition often leads to the total destruction of insulin producing cells, henceforth, needing insulin derived from external sources as medication.

II. There are cases where diabetes and children diagnosed with this disease are found to be with the presence of ketones, an organic compound whose simplest form is an industrial solvent known as acetone. The inability of the pancreas to produce insulin is due to ketoacidosis, the presence of excessive level of acid in the blood. This type of diabetes is known as diabetes ketoacidosis

III. Overweight or obese children as atypical in type 2 diabetes, wherein they manifest resistance to insulin are often characterized by the following traits common among diabetic sufferers:

• They are overweight and experience very little or no weight loss at all and sugar is often present in their urine.

• They seldom experience thirstiness or produce excessive urine.

• About 45% to 80 % of children with type 2 diabetes have one diabetic parent; often, the family history of diabetes sufferers have spanned for more than one generation.

• They typically belong to American Indian, African American, Hispanic or Asian origin.

• About 90% of type 2 diabetic children possess dark shiny patches of skin often found in creases or between fingers, toes and back of the neck, often earning the description “dirty neck”.

The large number of children suffering from type 2 diabetes led the experts to believe that social and environmental factors render this children as susceptible to diabetes.

While in some cases said factors actually trigger genetic tendencies, the inability to maintain blood sugars at a normal level is largely due to the primary problem of adults who only passed on the abnormality to their children. Later, the development of diabetes and children who inherited this disease will progress into totally damaging their insulin producing cells.

Responsible parenting therefore should begin even before we become parents. How we take care of our body and of our children will pave the way for possible disorders to develop or be genetically passed on to the future generations.

The impaired genes plus the prevalence of negative social and environmental factors are said to be the recent findings as to why diabetes and children have developed a semblance of correlation.
