Type 2 diabetes is a disease for life considered as the most common type of diabetes. It is manifested by high blood sugar levels in the blood due to the lack of response by the body to the insulin produced by the pancreas.

This is prevalent among obese people because the fat is obstructing the ability of the body to use the insulin. Hence, type 2 diabetes medication differs from Type 1 diabetes in as much as it aims to regulate blood sugar levels through weight reduction and oral medication.

The initial treatments, which are normally effective for type 2 diabetes, are good meal planning for lowering the blood glucose (sugar) level, achieving weight loss and exercise. If necessary, oral medication is introduced in the reduction of the blood sugar; otherwise, this may eventually lead to insulin injection since diabetes is a progressive disease.

Type 2 diabetes medications have to deal with two kinds of problem, the inability of the body to produce more insulin and the resistance of the cells to insulin to allow glucose absorption.

Hence, there are five classes of drugs available as oral medication treatments for the type 2 diabetic patient, namely:

1. Sulfonylurea – This drug helps to release more insulin and has been in use since 1950. Usually taken one or two times in a day before meal.

2. Meglitinide – Medication is taken before each meal that stimulates the beta cells to release more insulin.

3. Biguanide – A medication that decreases the glucose production of the liver.

4. Thiazolidinedione – As an oral drug, it helps the insulin to become effective in the muscle and fat, and the reduction of glucose production of the liver.

5. Alpha-glucosidase inhibitor – Should be taken in upon the first bite in a meal. This drug blocks the breakdown of food groups like starch, potato, bread and pasta to lower the level of blood glucose.

A lot of type 2 diabetes medications result to various side effects such as diarrhea, sore throat, nausea, upper respiratory tract infection, heart problem, etc. The afflicted should carefully monitor the intake of these medications to avoid further complications. It is best to inform the reader that alcohol and some diabetes pills may cause some interaction resulting to vomiting, redness of the skin or sickness.

To allow the medication pills to work efficiently, the diabetic patient has to eat meals that are well planned and support the treatment with a suitable exercise regimen. These oral medications are expected to work well only among type 2 diabetes, since the body system can still wait for the medicine to pass the process of digestion before reaching the blood stream.

However, there are instances when diabetes pills will not work for some. They may achieve a lowering of blood glucose levels when they take the pills, but not enough to achieve reaching the near normal range. These are the cases when some patients have to take both oral medication and insulin shots. Accordingly, the aim is to help the insulin to work more efficiently.

Using medications wisely is part of managing a patient’s diabetes. Hence, with the able support of the doctor, nurse, dietitian and the diabetes educator, the diabetic patients can obtain the best effects of a type 2 diabetes medication.
