Affliction with diabetes requires knowing not only the treatments but also of knowing ways on how to prevent diabetes. We can prevent diabetes if we know how our body acquired the disease.

Having diabetes is having high blood sugar level. This is due to the absence of insulin to convert the sugar in the body into energy. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas to regulate the body metabolism.

Normally, the role of insulin is to convert carbohydrates and proteins to amino acids during and after eating. There is an abrupt rise of glucose being absorbed in the bloodstream after eating. The pancreas will now trigger the beta cells to produce insulin to normalize the sugar level.

If there is no sufficient insulin to compensate for the rise in sugar level, there will be an oversupply of sugar resulting to hyperglycemia or diabetes. The sugar is now excreted in the urine instead of having a supply of energy that the body can use.

Henceforth, the matter of diabetes prevention must take into consideration some of the following guidelines:

1. Maintain a body weight at the ideal level by having a regular exercise. Exercise normalizes blood flow and increases the sensitivity of the pancreas to produce insulin.

2. Avoid being overweight in both children and adults; and adults over 45 years old should have regular screening for type 2 diabetes. This way, the rise in the blood sugar level is being monitored.

3. Sustain a blood pressure level of 130/80 mm/Hg or lower. This will prevent overworking the kidney.

4. If diabetes is controlled, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), should be checked every 6 months, or 3 months at the least.

5. Aspire for a low-density lipoprotein (LDL) of less than 100 and high density lipoprotein (HDL) of above 40, to avoid arterial clogging which can lead to heart attacks.

6. Take a yearly kidney test.

7. Consult an opthalmologist who specializes in diabetic retinopathy at least once a year. Diabetics usually experience blurry vision leading to blindness.

8. Eat foods rich in fiber like breads, pasta, rice, whole grain cereals or crackers. Also, eat fruits, vegetables, lean meats, fish, skinless chicken or turkey and low-fat milk. Always consume a low fat and a low salt food.

9. Quit smoking if you are a smoker.

10. Avoid too much stress. Treat stress as a part of life by learning to handle it during stressful times. Stress can cause blood glucose to rise.

Following these guidelines may prevent diabetes.
